Sunlight exposure generates oxidative stress in skin that can result in photodamage, including photoageing and skin cancer. The body uses antioxidants to neutralise oxidation of nucleic acids, proteins and lipids; but protection achieved by oral ingestion is limited (Placzek et al, 2005)

To augment antioxidant protection, we have developed and reported three generations of topical antioxidant formulations, each with progressively better protection against solar-simulated radiation

The current formulation contains physiologic antioxidants, vitamins C and E, stabilised by a potent

plant antioxidant, ferulic acid; optimised for chemical stability, percutaneous absorption, and photoprotection (Lin et al, 2005).

15% PURE L – ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C)

• The body’s most important water-soluble antioxidants
• Inhibits UVA and UVB radiation-induced damage

1% ALPHA-TOCOPHEROL (VITAMIN E)

• The body’s most important lipid, or fat-soluble, antioxidant with significant antioxidant functions, especially in cell membranes and lipoproteins

• Helps to protect the cellular membrane from free radical damage
• Improves the skin’s water binding abilities
• Anti-inflammatory properties

0.5% FERULIC ACID

• Ubiquitous plant antioxidant
• Neutralises free radicals known as “superoxide,” “hydroxyl radical” and “nitric oxide”
• Suppresses radiation-induced oxidative reactions
• Acts synergistically with other antioxidants, improving their potency
• Absorbs UV (approved sunscreen in Japan)
• Anti-inflammatory properties
• Easily absorbed by the skin
