Emulsifiers are commonly used in skincare to blend ingredients like oil and water, creating a smooth, uniform texture. However, many emulsifiers double as surfactants—acting like soap on your skin. In the context of skincare in South Africa, “dermatologist approved” means a product has been tested by a dermatologist or a third-party lab under the supervision of a dermatologist and deemed safe for use. This typically involves a Human Repeat Insult Patch Test (HRIPT) to assess potential irritation or allergic reactions. The dermatologist reviews the test results and provides their approval based on the findings.
